The local councils of Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Kingston have joined together to create the “South London Waste Plan”. The public face of this plan is the need to move away from landfill and comply with mandated targets by 2020, however the ongoing public consultation indicates the intention to build and operate an incineration facility to burn waste.
Croydon Greens had suspected the South London Waste Partnership would lead to proposals for the construction of an incinerator since first becoming aware of the initial stage of consultation in October 2008. Having met the Project Manager in November 2008 and subsequently submitting a 5000 word official response to the initial consultation warning that incineration would be a disaster for public health, recycling efforts and hopes to avert catastrophic climate change (as well as costing the taxpayer an enormous amount of money), Croydon Greens announced their suspicions during the Waddon by-election in February 2009. These were dismissed as scaremongering.

In late June, Croydon Greens obtained a document proving Croydon Council intends to invite bids for incineration, sludge disposal, radioactive, toxic, medical and hazardous waste services, clinical waste disposal and refuse incinerator construction. The contract is worth nearly £1 billion.
